Vilafranca del PenedĆØs, or simply Vilafranca, is the capital of the comarca of the Alt PenedĆØs in Catalonia, Spain. The Spanish spelling of the name, Villafranca del PenedĆ©s, is no longer in official use. It is situated in the PenedĆØs Depression on the left bank of the Foix River, and on the main axis of communication from Barcelona to Valencia, served by a RENFE railway line (L4) and by the AP-7 autopista as well as by the C-243 and C-244 roads to Vilanova i la GeltrĆŗ and Igualada respectively.

The town was founded in the middle of the 12th century as a result of the decline of OlĆØrdola, which had been until then the main local centre. It was established as the seat of a vegueria in 1304. The Corts were held in the town in 1218 under King James I of Aragon, and again in 1358ā€“59 and in 1367. King Peter III of Aragon died while staying at the royal palace in Vilafranca in 1285.

MatarĆ³ is the capital and largest city of the comarca of the Maresme, in the province of Barcelona, Catalonia Autonomous Community, Spain. It is located on the Costa del Maresme, to the south of Costa Brava, between Cabrera de Mar and Sant Andreu de Llavaneres, to the north-east of Barcelona. As of 2010, it had a population of c. 122,932 inhabitants.

MatarĆ³ dates back to Roman times when it was a village known as ā€œIluroā€ or ā€œIlluroā€. The ruins of a first century BC Roman bath house (known locally as the Torre Llauder) were recently discovered and can be visited. The coastal N-II highway follows the same path as the original Roman road.

MatarĆ³ was declared a city by royal decree, even though at the time (nineteenth century) the population fell short of the requirement for city status.

The first railway in peninsular Spain was the MatarĆ³ ā€“ Barcelona (opened on 28 October 1848), led by the Catalan businessman and MatarĆ³ native Miquel Biada. This line now forms part of the RENFE R1 suburban service between Lā€™Hospitalet de Llobregat and MaƧanet-Massanes. MatarĆ³ is also connected with Barcelona and Girona by the C-32 autopista (freeway) and with Granollers by the C-60 autopista.

Vic is the capital of the comarca of Osona, in the Barcelona Province, Catalonia, Spain. Vicā€™s location, only 69Ā km far from Barcelona and 60Ā km from Girona, has made it one of the most important towns in central Catalonia.

Vic is of ancient origin. Vic, in past times, was called Ausa by the Romans. Iberian coins bearing this name have been found there. The Visigoths called it Ausona.

During the 8th and 9th centuries, Vic sat in the Spanish Marches that separated Frankish and Islamic forces. It was destroyed in 788 during a Muslim incursion. Afterwards only one quarter was rebuilt, which was called Vicus Ausonensis (vicus is Latin for city borough), from which the name Vic was derived. It was repopulated by Wilfred the Hairy in 878 who gained control over the high part of the city and gave up the lowest part to the bishop to construct the episcopal see. From then on, the city was ruled by the count of Barcelona and by the bishop of Vic.

At a council in Toulouges in 1027, the bishop of Vic established the first Peace and Truce of God that helped reduce private warfare.

During the 18th century the city was the first focus of the rebellion against the centralist policy of King Philip V of Spain. The conflict became the War of the Spanish Succession, which resulted in Catalonia losing its freedom as a nation.

In the early 20th century Vic had 9500 inhabitants, and in 1992 it hosted Roller Hockey events of the Barcelona 1992 Summer Olympics.

The area of todayā€™s Alghero has been settled since pre-historic times. The so-called Ozieri culture was present here in the 4th millennium BCE while the Nuraghe civilization was present in the area around 1500 BCE, as traces of Phoenician buildings have been found not far from the city.

Due to its strategic position in the Mediterranean Sea, Alghero was built around a fortified port, founded around 1102 by the Genoese Doria family. The Doria ruled it for centuries, apart from a brief period under the rule of Pisa (1283ā€“1284). In 1353 it was captured by the Aragonese under Bernardo de Cabrera, and could later grow thanks to the arrival of Catalan colonists. In the early 16th century Alghero received the status of Kingā€™s City (ciutat de lā€™Alguer) and developed economically.

On September 11, Catalonia commemorates the 1714 Siege of Barcelona defeat during the War of the Spanish Succession. As a punishment for their support to the claim of Habsburg Archduke Charles to the throne of Spain, institutions and rights of the territories of the Crown of Aragon were abolished by the victorious Bourbon monarchy in line with the political evolution occurring in other parts of Europe at the same time.
In 1980, the restored Generalitat de Catalunya (autonomous Government of Catalonia) proclaimed the 11th of September as the Catalan National Day (Catalan: La Diada Nacional de Catalunya; Eastern Catalan: [ɫə Ć°iĖˆaưə nəsiuĖˆnaÉ« də kətəĖˆÉ«uɲə], Western Catalan: [la Ć°iĖˆaĆ°a nasioĖˆnaÉ« de kataĖˆluɲa]).

Organizations and political parties traditionally lay floral offerings at the monuments of Rafael Casanova and General Moragues for their fight against the Bourbon army. Catalan nationalists also meet at the Fossar de les Moreres, where they pay homage to the defenders of city who died during the siege and were buried there. Throughout the day, there are political demonstrations, concerts and celebration events. Many citizens wave senyeres and estelades.

Ripoll is the capital of the comarca of RipollĆØs, in the province of Girona, Catalonia, Spain. It is located on confluence of the Ter River and its tributary Freser, next to the Pyrenees near the French border. The population was 11,057 in 2009.

The first traces of humans inhabiting the area date from the Bronze Age and can be seen in form of dolmens such as those found in El Sot de Dones Mortes or in Pardinella. This area was later used by peoples from the Atlantic culture to store bronze weapons and as a passway from the Catalan Central Depression to the Pyrenees. The area also has tombs from the late Roman occupation age and some belonging to the Visigoths.

It has a famous Benedictine monastery built in the Romanesque style, Santa Maria de Ripoll, founded by the count Wilfred the Hairy in 879. The count used it as a centre to repopulate the region after conquering it. In the High Middle Ages, its castle, the Castle of Saguardia, located in the county of Les Llosses was ruled by the SaguƠrdia family, of which PonƧ de la GuƠrdia was a famous troubadour.

Berga is the capital of the comarca (county) of BerguedĆ , in Catalonia, Spain.
Berga derives its name from the Bergistani, an Iberian tribe that lived in the area before the Roman conquest. The Bergistani were first subdued by Hannibal in 218 BC. They rebelled twice against the Romans and were twice defeated; after their second uprising, much of the tribe was sold into slavery. Livy mentions their principal town, Castrum Bergium which was likely the precursor to the modern town of Berga.
Berga was ruled by viscounts in the Early Middle Ages and it had its own counts from 988.
Berga was sold to king Peter II of Aragon in 1199.
Berga is perhaps most famous for its traditional festival of ā€œLa Patumā€, a celebration which occurs every Corpus Christi, lasting for five days.

The economy is agricultural, and Les Borges Blanques is a major producer of olives, in particular a variety known as arbequina which produces a highly-prized oil. The cooperative movement has strong roots in the area. There is little or no tourist infrastructure.
The traditional symbol of this city is an ox, which appears on a widely-used but unofficial coat of arms. These remind us that Les Borges Blanques was under the royal jurisdiction.

Benabarre (Spanish: [benaĖˆĪ²are]) or Benavarri (Catalan: [bənəĖˆĪ²ari], locally: [benaĖˆĪ²ari]; Aragonese: Benabarri) is a town in the Aragonese county of Ribagorza, in the province of Huesca, Spain.
Traditionally, Benabarre was the capital of the historic County of Ribagorza, which was more expansive in territory than today, and included the comarca of Alta RibagorƧa, now in the province of Lleida, Catalonia.
It was during the Spanish War of Independence, from 1808-1814, that the French Napoleonic troops, in retaliation, decided to make Graus the temporary capital of the county. Grausā€™ population since that time has increased such that it is the largest town in Ribagorza and has consequently evolved into the role of administrative county seat. Despite this, Benabarre continues to be a significant historical and cultural center of attraction.

Lleida (Catalan pronunciation: [ĖˆŹŽÉ›jưə], locally: [ĖˆŹŽejưɛ]; Spanish: LĆ©rida) is a city in the west of Catalonia, Spain. It is the capital city of the province of Lleida, as well as the largest city in the province and it had 137,387 inhabitants as of 2010, including the contiguous municipalities of Raimat and Sucs. The metro area has about 250,000 inhabitants. It is also the capital city of the SegriĆ  comarca.
Lleida is one of the oldest towns in Catalonia, with recorded settlements dating back to the Bronze Age period. Until the Roman conquest of the Iberian Peninsula, the area served as a settlement for an Iberian people, the Ilergetes. The town became a municipality, named Ilerda, under the reign of Augustus. It was reconquered in 1149, after being many centuries under the rule of the Moors, who had conquered the town in the 8th century. In 1297, the University of Lleida was founded, becoming the third oldest in the whole Spain. During the following centuries, the town was damaged by several wars such as the Reapersā€™ War in the 17th century and the Spanish Civil War in the 20th century. Since then, the city has been in a constant urban, commercial and demographic growth.
